Taylor Swift - first female in 43 weeks to top 'Hot 100' chart
Taylor Swift's “Look What You Made Me Do” has de-throned the Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber's 16 week hold at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This marks the first time this year that a woman has topped that chart ending a 43-week-long drought. The last time a female artist was in the top spot was when Halsey was featured on "Closer" by the Chainsmokers. She is also the first solo female artist to hit #1 since Adele's “Hello” held the spot from November 2015 into January 2016.
Billboard's most popular theory to explain the absence and sudden return of more women to the charts is that big-name female stars have been between projects, leaving more opportunities for established male acts like Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran to slide in.
